Ten impounded vehicles have been put to good use transforming practical courses at Weymouth College.

The vehicles, from manufacturers including BMW, Audi, Ford Saab, Honda, Renault and Mitsubishi, were released to the College after Head of Curriculum for Engineering and Automotive, Brian Oman, contacted the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner in Winfrith, Dorset, after seeing that Bournemouth and Poole College had received a similar donation earlier this year.

After making initial contact with the office of Commissioner David Sidwock, via Nicola Senior, the matter picked up pace and Mr Oman was put in touch with the Vehicle Recovery Scheme.

A large car transporter made two drop-offs of impounded cars in to the College’s Centre of Excellence for Construction Skills & Engineering.

This will become a rolling programme, with another fleet of vehicles expected to replace the current donation in the New Year.

This delivery has transformed the experiences for the diverse range of course provisions at Weymouth College, by providing learners with new and challenging practical experiences.

It has also emphasised the consequences to learners that the efforts to seize illegal vehicles by Dorset Police is a very serious intent. As the majority of our learners are close to becoming owners of their first cars this can only be a positive reinforcement of responsibility.

Mr Oman commented: “I wanted to take a moment to express my sincerest gratitude for the partnership between our college and Dorset Police. It has been immensely beneficial for our students, as it provides them with a diverse range of vehicles to train on, which is crucial for their development.

“In addition, the training links with the police have proven to be invaluable in ensuring the safety of our students on the road, particularly when they are driving their own vehicles. Your expertise and guidance in this regard have been truly appreciated.

“The opportunity for our students to learn from professionals like yourself is a privilege that not many educational institutions can offer. We believe that this partnership has greatly enhanced their understanding of road safety and has equipped them with the necessary skills to navigate the challenges they may encounter.

“We are truly grateful for your support and dedication to our students’ education. Your commitment to their safety on the road is commendable, and we look forward to continuing this collaboration in the future.

“Once again, thank you for everything you do. Your contribution makes a significant difference in the lives of our students.”
