Everyone has heard about apprenticeships and work experience…but have you heard of traineeships?

Put simply, a traineeship is a training programme – that features work experience, maths and English qualifications – and can act as a steppingstone to an apprenticeship or employment. A traineeship can help bridge experience and skills gaps and is a great CV builder.

Who are traineeships designed for?

Traineeships are designed for anyone aged 16-24 (or 25-year-olds with an education, health and care plan). They can help you prepare for an apprenticeship, a job or a further education course.

What skills will I develop?

Traineeships help to develop employability skills such as CV writing, sector focused vocational learning, English, maths and digital skills support whilst also undertaking a hands-on work placement. Traineeships are a great stepping stone and CV builder which allows you to explore a work sector gaining real skills and invaluable on-job experience to prepare you for the next step in your career.

How will my traineeship be structured?

Your Traineeship will feature both placement and classroom elements. You will spend time in both the classroom and working with your employer within your placement over a 12 week period.

More about our Traineeships

Is a Traineeship the same as a job?

A Traineeship is primarily a training programme rather than a job and you will not be be paid a wage whilst you are on the programme. Traineeships allow you to create a relationship with an employer whist building skills and knowledge which can potentially lead to an apprenticeship, employment or further, higher-level study.

Do I need any previous experience?

No, you do not require any previous experience to undertake a Traineeship at Weymouth College.

Are all Traineeships the same?

All Traineeships are individually designed to suit both you and your work placement facilitator. They are great for building new relationships with potential employers while also gaining on-the-job experience.

Will I be awarded a Qualification?

If you need to, you can study towards a Level 2 in Maths or English (both if required) alongside your Traineeship. This will help you to learn new skills that enhance your Traineeship while also providing you with one of the qualifications that employers look for.

Will there be a cost for my Traineeship?

Traineeships are fully funded by the Government and there will be no charge.
