The Foundation Degree in Sport; Coaching, Health & Fitness (delivered in partnership with the University of Plymouth) will appeal to those who have an interest in sport, or would like the opportunity to develop and enhance their understanding of either the coaching or fitness industry. If you are looking for a career in a dynamic and fast-growing profession doing something you enjoy, this course is well worth considering. Aims The course aims to provide you with a sound understanding of the key components of coaching, health and fitness, lifestyles and attitudes to exercise, promotion of healthy living, principles of fitness and training, and industry-specific management skills. You will be offered the opportunity to gain additional professional qualifications (Active IQ), which will qualify you to work as fitness instructors in the field.

Entry Requirements

Applicants should normally be at least 18 years of age. Applications are welcomed from candidates with a subject-specific Level 3 course such as a National Subsidiary/Diploma/Extended Diploma, A Level, Access to Higher Education Course, or a work-based course, such as NVQ 3 or Advanced Apprenticeship with 80 UCAS points achieved. Applications from candidates without formal qualifications, but who have a minimum of two years’ relevant work experience and are able to demonstrate that they have developed the necessary skills to succeed on the course will also be considered. All applicants will normally require at least 4 GCSE passes at grade C or above including maths and English (grade 4 new GCSE grading from 2017) or their Level 2 equivalents, and will be required to supply/undergo an enhanced DBS check. All applicants will be required to attend an interview.

Work-based learning

You are required to complete 200 hours work experience within appropriate health and fitness setting. Additional qualifications: as part of the course, you will have the opportunity to gain a Certificate in Fitness Instructing (Gym) at no extra cost and the option of a Certificate in Instructing Circuit Sessions at a discounted rate of £200

How will I be assessed?

This course is assessed through a combination of coursework and examinations.

 

Progression

Successful students have the opportunity to apply for the University of Plymouth BSc (Hons) Professional Practice (Health and Community) Top Up held at Weymouth College. In addition to this there are currently options to progress to courses offered by South Devon College (in partnership with University of Plymouth) BSc (Hons) Coaching (Sports Performance and Development) and BSc (Hons) Coaching (Outdoor Leadership). Progression onto other top-up courses at a variety of institutions is an option for those who wish to apply to study elsewhere.

Fees

The course fees for all students for this course will be £6750 per annum for 2022/23. Additional Course Costs

Additional costs include an option to gain a Certificate in Instructing Circuit Sessions at a discounted rate of £200. Currently the cost of visits/trips are funded as part of this course, as well as application costs for Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) clearance which is an enrolment requirement of this course. You will be expected to have appropriate sportswear, i.e. shorts, T-shirt and trainers. *Note All costs may be subject to change and may vary dependent on place of purchase.
