Preparation for Military Service - Level 2 Diploma
In Short
This course is a practical, work-related course where you will study the BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Public Services qualification. You will learn by completing projects and assignments that are based on workplace situations, activities and demands. You will spend time learning both in and outside of college to gain a greater understanding of the military services, and have the opportunity to meet with a range of employers for progression into a Military career. You will gain the knowledge, understanding and skills required for success in current and future employment, or for progression to higher level courses.
This course will be delivered in combination with the Preparation for Work in the Uniformed Emergency Services course to give students the overview of both career pathways.
Location
Preparation for Military Service will be based at our Kingston Maurward Campus from September 2026. This move allows us to make the most of the campus’ specialist facilities and extensive outdoor space, helping to create the best possible learning experience particularly for the practical elements of the course.

Entry Requirements
4 GCSEs grade 3 (D) or above including maths and English or level 1 in related subject. Mature students will be assessed by interview. You should be interested in all aspects of public services, outdoor activity and sport.

How will I be assessed?
All units are assessed and graded giving an overall grade for the qualification. Assignments will involve individual and group work, and will require full completion of investigations, reports and presentations.
Progression
You may progress to the Level 3 Public Services BTEC Extended Diploma.
Tools/Materials/Books
The College library has a wide variety of books relevant to the course that are available to borrow. You will be expected to purchase some books and you will be advised of this nearer the start of the course. For practical elements you are required to have appropriate kit including a compulsory kit element costing £65.
Fees
If you are aged 16-18 as of 31 August on the year of enrolment – no course fee. If you are over 19 as of 31 August and enrolling on a full-time programme of study a tuition fee will be applicable in most cases. Bursary funds There are financial support arrangements for 16-18 year olds and hardship funds available for the over 19s.
