Electrical Installation Diploma (L1)
This qualification allows you to acquire knowledge and craft skills of electrical installation. It does not require occupational evidence from the workplace, so is suitable for those who currently do not work within the electrical Industry (but may wish to do so). It will give you an opportunity to practice and be assessed in a secure environment on the installation of wiring systems together with the relevant theory of electrical installation. You will gain skills and knowledge in a wide range of electrical engineering aspects ensuring that you are able to work both competently and safely. You will have the opportunity to utilise the IET On-Site-Guide with some of the units; and also acquire the knowledge of electrical science and principles. For the Level 1 course you will study at the College for three days a week with approximately 60% of the course being theory and 40% practical. It combines lectures, directed study, workshop activities and simulated jobs in the College.
Entry Requirements
- Selection is by interview
- GCSEs at grade 4 or above including English, Maths and Science (or equivalent) or completion of Entry Level 3 Diploma in Basic Construction Skills plus relevant GCSEs or L1 Functional Skills in English & Maths
- You must demonstrate an interest and commitment to study.
- A colour blindness test may be required
Tools/Materials/Books
You will need On-Site-Guide to BS7671:2018 text book, approximately £25 for all levels and Requirements for Electrical Installations BS7671:2018 , approximately £90 for the Level 3 course only. You will also need to provide your own pens, paper and scientific calculator, and two folders in which to store your workshop and theory notes. It is also essential that you provide your own Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), safety shoes and gloves, without which no practical work can be undertaken. You must provide your own tools for use in practical workshop sessions. These must meet a minimum set of safety criteria; the College has an arrangement with a local wholesaler to provide a tool kit meeting these criteria for approximately £100. Facilities are available within the department to store materials kits and PPE. The College also requires you to purchase a materials package for the course. This is expected to be sufficient for the course and must be maintained in an appropriate working condition, breakages will need to be replaced; this is also available from one of the local wholesalers at a cost of approximately £100.
Fees
If you are aged 16-18 as of 31 August on the year of enrolment – no course fee. If you are over 19 as of 31 August and enrolling on a full-time programme of study a tuition fee will be applicable in most cases. Bursary funds There are financial support arrangements for 16-18 year olds and hardship funds available for the over 19s.
