In Short
There are strict guidelines in place both for organisations and individuals within the childcare sector. It is therefore essential to gain a qualification if you want to look after children. This course allows you to learn basic skills in caring for children. It includes theory and practical work, and provides a useful starting point for a career in this industry, and progression into further study.

A DBS check will be carried out as part of the course in order to work with vulnerable people.
Our facilities include the brand new Tyneham building at our Cranford Avenue campus, offering state-of-the-art learning and support resources used for Level 3 Health & Early Years, fitted with a mock hospital ward and children’s nursery.
Entry Requirements
Selection is by interview and a good school or employer reference. There are no formal entry requirements, but you will be expected to show a keen interest in working with children and to demonstrate an ability to cope with the assessment process. Other information such as assessment results, relevant experience and portfolio may be taken into consideration.
Course Content
You will study a mixture of theory and practical work within the course, including units related to caring for children and an introduction to Health, Social Care and EarlyYears.

- Growth and development for young children
- Human growth and development
- Respecting and valuing children
- Confidence building for the young child
- Talking and Listening and Understanding learning and development through play
- Finding out about Forest schools; Science, Music and Craft activities for young children
How will I be assessed?
You will be assessed for competency in each unit through the completion of a linked assignment. A pass in all units must be achieved in all areas to gain the full award.
Progression
NCFE is a nationally recognised provider of childcare qualifications. You will be able to enter employment at trainee level or progress to further education such as the NCFE Level 2 qualification in Childcare and Health and Social Care or to an Apprenticeship programme.

The College library has an extensive lending and reference book stock, specific books required will be advised.
Fees
If you are aged 16-18 as of 31 August on the year of enrolment – no course fee. If you are over 19 as of 31 August and enrolling on a full-time programme of study a tuition fee will be applicable in most cases. Bursary funds There are financial support arrangements for 16-18 year olds and hardship funds available for the over 19s.
