In Short

This course is a first stage teaching qualification, aimed at those working or wishing to work as a teacher or trainer in England. The qualification is suitable for those working in any education or learning environment and to study towards it, you need to have access to 30 hours of teaching. You will gain a fundamental understanding of the roles and responsibilities of a teacher/trainer in relation to legislation, equality, diversity, inclusivity and meeting the needs of learners. You will be able to use initial and diagnostic assessments, and plan and deliver inclusive teaching and learning. You will also be able to assess learning and use appropriate resources to support effective learning. Candidates need to have access to 30 hours teaching for the duration of the course.

There are no formal entry requirements.

Course Content

You will be able to provide evidence in a number of ways including:

  • Assignments – evidence the knowledge based assessment criteria
  • Practice – through a minimum of 30 hours of teaching which must be conducted in a teaching and learning environment
  • Observation – appropriately spaced throughout the programme.

There will a minimum of three observations linked to mandatory units:

  • Delivering education and training
  • Assessing learners in education and training
  • Using resources for education and training

How will I be assessed?

Assessment is through assignment work, lesson observation and recorded teaching hours covering five mandatory and one optional unit:

  • Understanding roles, responsibilities and relationships in education and training (L3, 3 credits)
  • Planning to meet the needs of learners in education and training (L4, 3 credits)
  • Delivering education and training (L4, 6 credits)
  • Assessing learners in education and training (L4, 3 credits)
  • Using resources for education and training (L4, 3 credits)
  • Inclusive practice (L4, 15 credits).

You will also build a portfolio of evidence which:

  • enables each unit to be assessed independently
  • shows that you have taken part in a minimum of 30 hours of practice, three house of observed and assessed practice which meets the required standard of practice.

All fees quoted are for British/ EEA Citizens with settled status who have been resident in an EEA country for the last 3 years or have exceptional circumstances or exceptional leave to remain. If you are in any doubt as to your status please ask for advice on enrolment.
