AAT Case Study
“When I left school my dream was to become an accountant. I decided to start work immediately and then try and find an apprenticeship. But life took over and I lost sight of that dream.
When my youngest daughter was 5 months old I started working in a supermarket –not a bad job at all but I knew it was not the field I really wanted to be in.
In the summer of 2016 I saw an advert for an accountancy course at Weymouth College and decided to give it a go – I was actually convinced I wouldn’t be accepted (I only had my GCSEs and they would surely be out of date by now).
I thought the application process would be gruelling – but in actual fact it couldn’t have been easier, and my existing qualifications were fine.
I was also concerned – as a single mother – how I would be able to afford to follow my dream. But the College put my mind at rest, going through all my options and how they could help me to achieve my goal without financial hardship. Before I knew it I had started my Level 2 AAT.
I passed my Level 2 exams and continued onto Level 3. When I started level 3 I also began working as a finance assistant, something I could never have envisioned doing 18 months before.
It was hard juggling college, work and childcare but I have an amazing tutor who was always there if I needed help. She was able to make things so much clearer, helped me get a routine in place – certain days for studying, days for working out, for working and for being a mother. Everything is possible if you put your mind to it, my children are proud of me and the college make everything so seamless.
For anyone thinking about starting a course but worried about how it will all fit in, how it will be funded etc. – don’t worry it will work and once you start you will never look back. It is never too late to start learning something new!”
