In Short
This course follows the English fast-track syllabus offered by Pearson Edexcel. Studying English language will develop the skills required to analyse real-world and relevant texts. It is a wide academic subject which gives you the opportunity to study and write in a number of different styles. You will gain an insight into how language works and influences us. You will benefit from being taught by a well-qualified team of lecturers with substantial teaching experience.
Entry Requirements
GCSEs are one of the most valuable and widely accepted qualifications for many different careers. This course is designed for students who have already achieved a grade 3/D at GCSE or have a Level 2 Functional Skill and wish to or need to improve their grade.
If you do not hold the required qualification our 106 town centre campus can assist you with achieving a Level 2 Functional Skill in order to progress onto GCSE.
Course Content
You will study a range of 19th century fiction, 20th and 21st century non-fiction and literary non-fiction texts enabling you to develop the skills required for close reading and analysing. You will also develop writing skills by writing for a variety of purposes and audiences in a range of styles and tones. Additionally you will look at grammatical and structural features along with focusing on vocabulary, sentence structure, spelling and punctuation. Finally you will undertake a spoken language endorsement which involves a presentation, listening to questions and responding using Standard English.
How will I be assessed?
This course will be assessed by two written examinations in May/June totalling 3 hours and 50 minutes and a spoken language endorsement.
Progression
A qualification in English is a valuable enhancement to your career opportunities. Successful completion of this course enables you to proceed to Advanced Level English and many other subjects.

Fees
If you have not already achieved GCSE English grade C/4 or above you will be entitled to fee remission otherwise you will be required to pay a fee of £811.
