Whether you’re revising for your first big exam or your final assessments before heading into work or university, exam season can feel overwhelming. But with the right tools, support and mindset, you can take control and approach the season with confidence.
Here’s our guide to preparing well — and looking after yourself along the way. Our top tips will help you stay focused, reduce anxiety and perform at your best.
🗓️ 1. Start Early – And Make a Plan
Last-minute cramming is never ideal. Give yourself plenty of time to review everything you’ve covered this year. Use a revision timetable to break your subjects into manageable chunks. Prioritise the topics you find most challenging and don’t forget to build in breaks!
Top Tip: Colour-code your timetable or use post-it notes on your wall to keep things visual and engaging.
🧠 2. Find Your Best Revision Style
Everyone learns differently. Some of us are visual learners, others are more hands-on. Figure out what works best for you:
-
Visual learners: Try diagrams, mind maps, and flashcards
-
Auditory learners: Record yourself reading notes or use podcasts
-
Kinaesthetic learners: Use movement, models, or practical examples
Top Tip: Teach someone else what you’ve learned— it’s a powerful way to test your understandingand reinforce your knowledge.
📴 3. Minimise Distractions
TikTok can wait! When it’s time to revise, find a quiet space and switch off your phone or put it on ‘Do Not Disturb’. Apps like Forest or Pomofocus can help you stay focused.
Top Tip: Study in short bursts — 25 minutes of focused work followed by a 5-minute break can be more effective than hours of distracted reading.
🍎 4. Eat, Sleep, Move, Repeat
Don’t underestimate the power of good health. Regular meals, a good night’s sleep and some exercise each day will do wonders for your brainpower and concentration.
Top Tip: Swap energy drinks and sugary snacks for water, fruit, and wholegrains to keep your energy steady throughout the day.
📝 5. Practice Past Papers
Get familiar with the exam format by practising past papers under timed conditions. This helps with time management and shows you the types of questions that could come up.
Top Tip: Ask your tutors for feedback on your practice answers — they’re there to help you succeed.
😌 6. Don’t Stress It Alone
Feeling overwhelmed? You’re not the only one. Talk to your classmates, tutors or the college’s support services. Weymouth and Kingston Maurward have excellent Student Services teams who are here to support you through exam season. Find out more here.
Top Tip: Try breathing exercises or mindfulness apps like Headspace or Calm if you’re feeling anxious.
🌞 Coping on Exam Day
The big day has arrived—take a breath, you’ve got this. Start your morning calmly and give yourself plenty of time to get ready. Avoid last-minute cramming and instead focus on keeping a clear, calm head.
Top Tips for Exam Day:
-
Eat breakfast: Fuel your brain with something nutritious
-
Arrive early: Give yourself time to settle before the exam starts
-
Bring everything you need: Pen, ID, calculator (if allowed), and a water bottle
