Students at Coastland College’s Weymouth Campus enjoyed an energetic and wide-ranging discussion last week, as Lloyd Hatton, MP for South Dorset, visited to speak with A Level Politics, A Level Law, and Level 3 Sport and Public Services learners.
Labour MP Mr Hatton spent over an hour with the group, sharing insights into life in Parliament and answering questions on some of the biggest issues facing young people today.
Students prompted discussions on housing, the cost of transport, the rise of AI, LGBTQ+ rights and the future of public services – sparking an open and honest debate that reflected their curiosity about how decisions in Westminster shape everyday life.
Talking about the challenges facing young people locally, Mr Hatton said he wanted “help support people in Weymouth, especially in the housing sector… making sure there are houses available for everyone.”
He also spoke about travel costs for young people, setting out his belief that “you should have a free bus pass for those under 21,” recognising that transport can be a barrier to work, college and university.
Students were keen to explore how government works behind the scenes, asking questions about the civil service, career routes into Parliament, and the many roles that keep essential services running.
Mr Hatton shared his views on bringing railways, water and electricity back into public ownership, and the importance of “standing up for the NHS” to protect services for future generations.
AI also proved a popular topic, with the MP discussing how society must protect the things that matter, while learning to navigate new technologies responsibly.
Feedback from students was overwhelmingly positive, with many saying the session helped deepen their understanding of politics, public services and career pathways within government.
Coastland College is grateful to Mr Hatton for giving up his time to meet with students. He handled a rapid-fire round of questions with good humour and insight, and we look forward to welcoming him back in the future.
