Inspiring stories: An unconventional career choice for former student

At Weymouth College, we celebrate the success of our former students, and National Careers Week is the perfect time to share inspiring career journeys.

One standout story is that of Becca Cook, who transitioned from studying at Weymouth College to working into the perhaps unconventional career of funeral care.

While studying health and social care at Weymouth College, Becca chose to work in a funeral directors’ office instead of the hospital or care home placements that were selected by her peers. What was meant to be a 120-hour placement quickly doubled as Becca became captivated by the work.

When the placement ended, Becca pursued nursing at a hospital, believing it was the natural next step. It wasn’t long before she realised her heart was elsewhere.

Becca told Dorchester Nub News: “I loved my placement so much and didn’t want to leave. Once I started working as a nurse, I quickly found that I missed being at the funeral directors.”

At just 22 years old, Jasmine has embarked on a meaningful and compassionate career, helping families through difficult times. Her journey highlights the importance of following your passion and finding a career that makes a difference.
