Green Skills – The Installation and Maintenance of Heat Pump Systems (Non-refrigeration circuits)
LCL Awards Level 3 Award in the Installation and Maintenance of Heat Pump Systems (non-refrigerant circuits)
For those using oil, electricity, liquid gas, or solid fuels to heat their home, the installation of a heat pump may be a good way of reducing their carbon footprint and saving money on energy bills. It is these financial and environmental benefits which have fuelled a surge in popularity for domestic heat pump installation – particularly over the last decade – and a subsequent demand for qualified installation and maintenance operatives
We are now able to offer fully funded with no cost to pay, a nationally recognised Level 3 Award in the Installation and Maintenance of Heat Pumps. This Award is fully recognised by many accreditation bodies of the Microgeneration Certification Scheme.
This short course will provide the knowledge and understanding required to install, commission and maintain groundsource and airsource heat pump systems.
Who is this qualification for?
Designed for installers, specifiers, building control officers and inspectors and maintenance businesses in particular – this course may be undertaken by all suitably qualified operatives looking to develop the knowledge and practical skills to safely undertake heat pump installations.
Course Content
You will explore and develop an understanding of:
- Health and Safety requirements associated with heat pump systems
- Regulations and legislation relating to heat pumps
- Domestic pipework installation
- Installation of heat pumps
- Servicing and commissioning of heat pumps
- Basic refrigeration principles
- Carrying out safety checks
- Checking system stability
- Identifying installation faults
PLEASE NOTE: Course participants will not install a heat pump during this course. For anyone wanting this type of training it is recommended that they contact a heat pump manufacturer.

The experience in these sectors will normally be 3 years, although where the initial assessment confirms the learner has the necessary skills, knowledge and experience which can be evidenced via RPL assessment this duration may be reduced.
In addition, if not included in the above current certification learners must hold:
- WRAS Water Regulations/Water Byelaws or equivalent
Weymouth College can deliver the WRAS ahead of this course for those learners who do not hold the qualification.
If you are unsure about your current eligibility, please contact kris_thorne@weymouth.ac.uk who will be happy to help.
Assessment
Assessments will consist of a combination of practical and theory examinations.
Candidates who successfully complete the course and assessment will receive an LCL Awards Certificate of Competence.
Cost - Fully Funded
