T Levels are transforming post-16 education by combining rigorous academic study with real-world industry experience.

As we celebrate T Levels Week, Weymouth and Kingston Maurward College proudly showcases its wide array of T Levels, designed to prepare students for skilled careers, Higher Education or Apprenticeships.

What are T Levels?

T Levels are two-year courses for 16 to 18-year olds, equivalent to three A Levels, developed in collaboration with employers to meet industry needs.

You’ll spend 80% of your time in the classroom and 20% on a minimum 45-day industry placement with an employer to give you the skills and knowledge companies look for. Your industry placement gives you the chance to learn what a real career is like while you continue your studies.

Each T Level includes core sector knowledge, specialised skills training and hands-on experience to ensure students are ready to excel in the workplace or Higher Education.

Why choose T Levels?

Students who choose T Levels benefit from real-world readiness, learning skills that are directly applicable to their chosen industries. These qualifications offer a clear pathway to employment, Higher Education or Apprenticeships, equipping learners with both technical and transferable skills.

Nationally, more than 90% of T Level completers from the first cohort were in education or employment 9-10 months after their course.

T Levels not only provide direct routes into employment but also open doors to Higher Apprenticeships and university-level study. Each T Level is recognised by universities and aligns with UCAS points, enabling students to progress to degree programs in their chosen field.

Additionally, many students transition into Higher Apprenticeships, combining paid work with continued learning to gain further qualifications in areas such as engineering, digital technology, and healthcare.

For example:

  • A student completing the Digital Support Services T Level could progress to a degree in computer science or a Higher Apprenticeship as a software developer.
  • The Health T Level provides a foundation for nursing degrees or healthcare apprenticeships
  • The Agriculture T Levels prepare students for advanced studies in environmental science or sustainable farming apprenticeships
  • A student that completes a Business Management T Level could step directly into employment at a junior level, or onto a degree in Business with a specific focus in areas such as International Management, Human resource Management or Marketing.

Minister for Skills Jacqui Smith emphasised the significance of T Levels, commenting: “This government is backing T Levels as a top-quality qualification, helping young people develop skills to seize opportunity.

“T Levels offer hands-on experience in the workplace and excellent career prospects for young people seeking skilled work or further study. This September saw us launch three new subjects, with another set to launch next year.

“I’m delighted to see more employers getting behind T Levels by offering industry placements, including Amazon, Lloyds Banking Group, and Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust, helping to nurture future talent and support the development of in-demand skills.”
