Coastland College marked its official launch on Friday with a striking celebration on Weymouth beach, where renowned sand artist Mark Anderson of Sandworld created a one-of-a-kind sculpture to welcome in a new era for education in Dorset.
The intricate artwork depicted the outline of Dorset, with the newly unveiled Coastland College logo at its centre.
Mr Anderson, whose large-scale sculptures have been enjoyed by thousands of visitors to the unique Sandworld attraction, was joined by a recent student at the College, Ali Stevenson, who helped bring the design to life in the early hours of the morning.
As the sun rose, the sculpture became the focal point for a celebratory gathering, led by Coastland College Principal and CEO Kate Wills, Chair of Governors Chris Evans, and Student Governors Ralph Hrustinszki (Weymouth Campus) and Sophie Payne (Kingston Maurward Campus).

The sculpture drew attention from beachgoers and visitors throughout the morning, with many stopping to take photographs.
The event followed the unveiling of the College’s new name and look last week, following the merger of Weymouth and Kingston Maurward College in August 2024. Together, the combined College provides an unrivalled breadth of opportunity for learners of all ages in Dorset, and was rated ‘Good’ by Ofsted in May 2025.
Principal and CEO Kate Wills said: “This sand sculpture captures the creativity, ambition and community spirit at the heart of Coastland College.
“It was wonderful to see Ali, one of our recent graduate students, working alongside Mark to help bring it to life – a perfect reflection of the collaboration and opportunity that defines our College.”
Chair of Governors Chris Evans added: “Friday’s event was a joyful way to mark the beginning of Coastland College. Just as the sculpture brought people together on the beach, we are committed to bringing communities, industries and students together across Dorset under our new name.”
