What is Work-based Learning?
Work-based Learning (WBL) qualifications enable your employees to fit study around work and still earn whilst they learn. Employees can achieve valuable qualifications at the same time as gaining relevant, practical experience in real work situations. Work-based learning also incorporates Apprenticeships, please refer to the apprenticeship pages for further information.
Unlike other similar courses that require students to be away off-site during working hours, WBL courses have none or limited time away from the workplace. Benefits include:
- Course design involves a minimum time away from the workplace
- Use of your own work projects for assessment
- Employer and student benefit from completion of assignment projects
- Increased confidence which makes time more effective in the workplace
- A qualification that could be awarded after one year of study
- There are no examinations; assessment is by coursework only.
The qualifications are ‘competence-based’ where the student learns practical, work-related tasks designed to help develop the skills and knowledge to do a job effectively. Students can take WBL qualifications if;
- they are employed
- they are studying at college and have a part-time or access to work placement.
After completing a level the employee progress on to the next possible subject level in the appropriate job role. Once studied at Level 3, they can also go on to a higher education course in a related vocational area, such as:
- Higher National Certificate or Diploma
- Foundation Degree
- Other vocational specialism.
Weymouth College offers WBL qualifications across many vocational subjects. Take a look at the WBL qualifications Weymouth College has to offer on the Course Finder. The costs of the qualifications vary dependent on age and circumstances of applicant.
