Former student uses her vocational qualification as a stepping stone to the travel and tourism industry
Amanda Milner studied with Weymouth College from 1995 - 1997, on the BTEC National Diploma in Travel & Tourism. Previously at Royal Manor Arts College, Amanda chose the College because of its location in Weymouth.
During the course Amanda completed two different work placements; in her first year at Haven Holiday Camp and in her second year at Sticky Bears Water-ski School in Dorchester. Amanda got the chance to arrange trips away as part of the 'Visitor Attractions' module of the course, and really enjoyed the variety of the subjects over the two-year period, the educational trips and the hands-on work experience.
"The staff at Weymouth College were great; I had great tutors and they were very supportive. They taught me from an early age the importance of professionalism in business and to improve on my travel geography!"
Following her BTEC, Amanda went on to Buckinghamshire & Chilterns University College to do a HND in Tourism Management, and then graduated with a BSc (Hons) in Tourism. "During my HND I had a compulsory work placement where I had the opportunity to go to Italy for four months, working for Keycamp Holidays."
"My studies at Weymouth College started my love affair for working in travel, and firmly cemented the foundation for my higher studies. Personally, I think it is vital to show potential employers commitment. At the time it can seem really hard but if you persevere you will see the future benefits and undoubtedly reap the rewards."
Amanda now works at Portland Port as a sales and marketing executive for the commercial team, she co-ordinates the cruise ship calls and is responsible for ship services.
