A Patchwork of Talents

Rebecca Ayles, Jenny Jenkins and Stuart Earp, all completed their BTEC First, National Diplomas and Foundation degrees with flying colours. Since training at Weymouth College through the University of Plymouth, they have gone on to form a touring theatre company 'Patchwork Theatre'.

The name Patchwork came from the combination of skills each performer brings to the company including performance skills such as:
  • Ballet
  • Contemporary Dance
  • Physical theatre
  • Classical acting
  • Singing
  • Musical theatre
  • Professional musicianship.

The company has also gained a wide range of backstage skills including sound and lighting design and operation, stage management, set and costume design, theatrical hair and make-up and business skills including marketing and publicity. Having such a wide range of skills with only three members allows the company to be self-contained and independently professional.

Our final major project was a fantastic show we created ourselves with the music students and it was an experience I will never forget. End quotation mark

Performing arts students have done a grand job in turning back the clock to the 60s for this hit musical that takes place in a flower shop where a blood-sucking plant aims to take over the world. With the College maintaining its high standard for tuition in the arts, a visit to their student productions is a pleasure. Long may they continue to be an asset to the town. End quotation mark

From Bollywood to Weymouth College

In Bangladesh, Bishan Mazumder danced for five years with the Nrityhanchal dance company after obtaining the Bangladesh equivalent to A levels.

Whilst performing at a dance show in London in 2007, Bishan chose Weymouth College to further his education and enrolled on the ESOL course to learn English. Bishan continued his education by enrolling on the BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Performing Arts and intends to move on the BTEC Extended Diploma in Performing Arts - Dance Pathway.

He has found the College a safe environment to learn in and says all the staff are very friendly and helpful. As English is his second language (Bangla is his native language), the Learner Support team have been particularly supportive for Bishan.

What Bishan has enjoyed most about the course are all the friends he has made and the opportunity to start his own Bollywood dance group.

Once a month Bishan goes to London to dance with the Torango & Annda dance group from which he gains invaluable experience.

After completing his studies at Weymouth College Bishan intends to continue his education by going on to University.

My last two years at the college have taught me so much. I have been given so many opportunities to really understand the music business and the team work every performer needs to succeed. End quotation mark
