Over 150 guests joined the music and performing arts students and staff at Weymouth College on Thursday 20th October to celebrate the launch of the South West’s exciting new centre for industry training in the Performing Arts – The Bay Studios.
Guests attended a reception in the Studio 1 bar and were invited to take guided tours of the Bay Studios amazing facilities.
Following a short musical set from the Bay Studios outstanding music students – and the official opening ribbon cutting by Weymouth College Principal Nigel Evans and the students – guests were treated to a gala performance from the Bay Studios companies. Showcasing performance art, dance and music – together with some fairly impressive pyrotechnic cannons! – the performance was greeted with deafening applause from the audience.
Sarah Turner-Higgins, Head of School Visual and Performing arts said:
“I am so pleased to be launching the Bay Studios this evening. We are offering our students an exciting, industry relevant place to study Acting, Dance, Music and Music technology right here in Weymouth. This new environment provides a suite of level two, three and four nationally recognised qualifications for students to develop their artistic skills whilst preparing for the real challenge of working in the creative industries.
“From September 2016 our students have joined ‘companies’ rather than just courses and their curriculum encourages the development of practical employability and independent business skills alongside their creative programme. At Bay Studios we are aiming to ensure that all our alumni leave Weymouth College equipped with the very best tools to assist with finding work or enabling them to generate their own employment opportunities”.
